Born on 9th August 1918 [Portsmouth 2b:754]. Son of John and Maud Alice SHERGOLD (née HANNAM) of Portsmouth. His father was 590105 Private in 441st Company, Agricultural Labour Corps at the time of John Bertram's birth.

In the 1939 register, at 22 Ethel Road, Portsmouth were his father John [3-10-1891] builder's labourer; mother Maud A [5-7-1889]; brothers George H [9-2-1920] a painter, Ronald S [30-1-1929] and Douglas W [15-11-1933]; sister Margaret I [28-3-1922] a shop assistant, later to become Mrs RANSON. There is one closed record.

John married Lilian BARRETT from Lowther Street in Newmarket in 1946. It was his in-laws they were visiting on holiday at the time of his death and his own family then remained in Newmarket.


John enlisted in July 1939 and served in Europe, being evacuated from Dunkirk.
He was a despatch rider for 11 Group Army Signals at SEAC HQ (Kandy, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)towards the end of 1944. For part of his military career he was a member of the "White Helmets", the motorcycle display team of the Royal Signals. Demobbed on 30th April 1946, John (Bert to the family) was a journeyman plasterer, living at 185 Exning Road at the time of his death.

His illness was a legacy of his military service in the Far East but John cannot be added to the Debt of Honour as he died outside of the qualifying dates




John is buried in Newmarket Cemetery grave P:443E
unmarked, but immediately to right of Beatrice and William NUTTALL, behind the Cross of Sacrifice
